We were just there this week and currently staying in Lagos. It’s just beautiful isn’t it? It looks like they’ve been working on the Sagres fort though, it’s a little ‘whiter and brighter’ at the moment.

It’s around 6 km from Sagres so you could walk to it in an hour or so. We saw some people doing that and I believe there’s also a taxi in Sagres.

There’s also a fair number of kiteboarding and windsurfing shops in town that might offer a ride out there for a few euros and you could always try to rent or borrow a bike while in town.

Otherwise I would ask at the hostel or one of the hotels. This time of year it’s fairly quiet there so I would imagine there would be plenty of people willing to take you around for cheap.

Have fun!

I am near Sagres now and thinking about going there. Is there an easy way to get from Sagres to Cabo Sao Vicente if you don’t have your own car?

Thanks Alexander. Hopefully next time we’re in the Algarve region it’ll be summer so we can truly enjoy the beaches and the area’s many activities. We would definitely love to check out Culatra as well.

I love the Algarve – and I love to read articles about the Algarve when not being there.
If you have enjoyed Sagres so much, you shed travel to the small island of Culatra when you come to the Algarve the next time.
It seems to be out of this world even though it is just about 4 miles away from the Algarve coast south of Olhão. Just take the ferry or a taxi boat!
Have fun and see you soon at the Algarve!

Wow, those are definitely some massive waves Terry! It would have been neat to see. Weird part is that it looks so sunny and calm out.

Those fishermen would NOT have been down the cliff-face then, lol!
For the benefit of anyone who hasn’t already seen them there are two videos on YouTube that are particularly worth having a look at. They are titled ‘Huge Waves in Sagres, Portugal’ and
‘Hercules Storm in Sagres, Portugal’.

Hey Gary. Great comment and thanks for the extra tips!

We traveled all around the Algarve region and saw some great sites. We’ll be posting more of our travels in the Algarve area in the coming months. It’s definitely a gorgeous area of the world and has so much history it’s almost impossible not to find yourself reading about it all as you check out the sites.

Given its rich history in the exploration of the new world (Prince Henry’s school of navigation located there or nearby, etc.) in one sense, I expected much more than we found-no museum, no monuments, etc.

What I didn’t expect was how beautiful, atmospheric and wonderful that patch of ground proved to be, with its ancient little chapel, the remnants of the castle, the native landscape and stunning views. And knowing a bit of its history only added to the wonder–how Sir Francis could have stormed the castle in the 1580s, how a tidal wave following the 1755 earthquake of could have washed over those 200 foot high cliffs, and more.

We also enjoyed our visits to hill-top town of Monchique–the town and the spa, and would like to go back to hike the area, the old town in Lagos, the Olhao fish market, Vilamoura for its flash, the lovely village of Tavira near the Spanish border.

And the food–OMG, how they do fish–have it simply grilled, or go with more elaborate preparations. And for a bit of a splurge try the Infante Restaurant on the beach at Praia Verde, for amazing food, atmosphere and views.
